The 13th annual African American Achievement Awards ceremony was held on Feb. 25 at Evanston Township High School. The program recognizes the accomplishments of African American youth who have excelled in one of the following categories: character, leadership, civility, scholarship, community service and sportsmanship.

Everyone knows that, the more an athlete trains, the better that athlete becomes. A critical part of soccer is a player’s ability to play with a ball at his/her feet – it’s as fundamental as shooting is to basketball and throwing is to baseball. Coaches can teach someone how to do it correctly, but there’s just no way around it: mastery takes practice, lots and lots of practice.

To encourage Team Evanston’s players to practice, the club’s coaching staff has instituted “soccer homework,” designed to get them to do so in a challenging and fun way. Each week players will be given a homework assignment, which will also be posted on the website. Each assignment emphasizes a specific skill: touching a ball between the feet, juggling, raking the ball, and so on. Many are timed. Players are asked to practice the skill on their own, and when they think they’re ready, to work through six trials in the presence of a parent or guardian, who should record the results on the homework sheet. These don’t all need to be done at one time, and in fact should not be; instead, a player might do a trial, go off and practice, come back for another trial, and so on. Once the homework sheet is complete, players turn it in to their coach, who will record the player in a seventh attempt. If players want to try the skill more than is shown, that’s okay too – in fact, that’s encouraged!

The homework assignments are designed to require a minimal amount of space, for the most part. They can be completed in a bedroom, basement, or hallway. When weather permits, it is best that they are done outside.

I would like to stress that these activities are not mandatory, instead they are strongly recommended. Some families don’t allow soccer ball playing inside and at times the weather doesn’t allow it outside either. And, while players are encouraged to turn them in each week, if their schedule is tight or they’re not mastering the skill like they wish, they can turn them in later.

We hope that all players make an effort to turn their homework in regularly. What these homework assignments will not do is determine a player’s movement from team to team during tryouts. The exercises will undoubtedly improve their skill, which in turn will improve their performance on the field while increasing their love of the sport.

We sincerely hope that players and families view this homework as a fun, productive thing to do:  the last thing we want is to have it become a source of stress. So, please don’t let it. If a player struggles with a particular assignment, tell them not to worry: everyone struggles with something, that’s why we practice. If they continue to struggle, have them tell their coach, who can offer suggestions and get their confidence back up. It’s the process that’s important, not the end result.

And, of course the coaches would love parents’ feedback on the assignments, so if you have ideas on how to make it better, please let us know.

Purpose: All gear goes to the Heartland Alliance Refugee and Relocation Services, a Chicago agency that runs a summer soccer program for all kids of all ages that have arrived from war-torn countries. Children from all over the world that end up in Chicago have an opportunity to play the game and make friends on the field. They have very little equipment and are given what is donated to keep.

When: Donations are accepted year round.

Mission

The mission of Team Evanston Soccer Club is to provide the best possible tryout process and selection for every player and ensure that they are placed on a team that best reflects their ability and potential for success on the field.

General Information

Tryouts take place in June and typically consist of two 1.5 hrs tryouts dates per age group/gender. Additional dates may be added in case of inclement weather. Once players have tried out, the tryout selection committee will meet and determine team placement. Results are typically posted within a week of the last tryout date, but no sooner than the age group’s last league game.
 

Tryouts are open to boys and girls U08-U18. Please see the 2011-2012 season age group chart below. Players who are younger are eligible to participate in the club’s Academy program.

Team Selection 

Overview


Director of Coaching Issac Moushi and the tryout committee will evaluate all players and place them on a team that best reflects their ability and potential for success on the field. The tryout committee is made up of club coaches and trainers. The tryout field sessions consist of various drills, games, and exercises relevant to each age group. Players are divided in small groups and given an opportunity to show their ability in various game situations.

Once all field sessions are complete, the tryout committee meets and deliberates on team selections. Tryout committee meetings are also attended by at least one Team Evanston board member. The tryout committee evaluates players on the following criteria:
 
1. Tryout Performance
  • Technical Skill – dribbling, passing, shooting, etc.
  • Tactical Awareness – attacking & defending principles, spacing, movement off the ball
  • Physical Abilities – speed, strength, balance, and coordination
  • Psychological – aggressiveness, determination, discipline, sportsmanship
 
2. Previous Season Performance
  • Development- how much the player has improved from the beginning to the end of the season
  • Commitment- attendance, focus, and desire to play
  • Game Impact- dependent on position, how the player influences the outcome of games
  • Head Coach Evaluations
  • Trainer Evaluation- based on observations made during pool training
 
Methodology
 

Team Evanston and the tryout committee recognize that tryouts are extremely important to players and families. Often, there is a lot of pressure on the players to perform at their best in a short amount of time. Thus, it is the club’s goal to make sure every player is evaluated accurately. By using an evaluation system that utilizes multiple criteria, the tryout committee ensures that its final decision on team placement is objective and holistic.

 

For example, certain players perform really well in game situations when they are playing in their position, but when placed in a tryout, they simply do not show well. There are multiple reasons for this common occurrence: nervousness, inability to show well on a small field, playing a position the player is not used to. Similarly, certain players perform really well in tryouts, but struggle to make an impact throughout the season.

 

Taking these factors into consideration, the tryout committee discusses all possible aspects when making player and team selections. Every decision is made after a thorough review of all available information on every player. It is important for parents to recognize that a decision to place a player on a team is never made unilaterally, but through group deliberation and consensus. This ensures a fair and objective tryout selection process.

 

Missing/Incomplete Tryouts

As mentioned before, the club takes a holistic approach to player and team selection. That is, multiple factors are taken into consideration when making the final decision on placement. The club recognizes that outside factors such as injuries, family and school commitments, and travel plans may conflict with tryouts. The club will always give players opportunities to make up a tryout by attending another age group/gender’s tryout, however, it is important for parents to understand that in order for a player have the best possible evaluation, that player needs to attend all tryouts for his/her age group. It is the parent’s responsibility to check the tryout schedule and ensure that the player attends all tryouts, as well as contact the club if there is a conflict with any of the dates or times.

It is important that every player on the field understands this Code of Conduct before competing in their first match. Parents and fans must know the Code of Conduct as do the players and the coaches. FIFA’s Code of Conduct encapsulates all the sporting, moral, and ethical principles for which FIFA has always stood and for which it will continue to fight in the future, regardless of the influences and pressures may be brought to bear. The ten golden rules not only serve as a credo for FIFA as the world soccer body, but they also reinforce the sense of fraternity and cooperation among the members of the worldwide soccer family.

 

PLAY TO WIN

Winning is the object of playing any game. Never set out to lose. If you do not play to win, you are cheating your opponents, deceiving those who are watching, and also fooling yourself. Never give up against stronger opponents, but never relent against weaker ones. It is an insult to any opponent to play at less than full strength. Play to win, until the final whistle.

 

PLAY FAIR

Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Cheating is easy, but brings no pleasure. Playing fair requires courage and character. It is also more satisfying. Fair play always has its reward, even when the game is lost. Playing fair earns you respect, while cheats are detested. Remember: It’s only a game. And games are pointless unless played fairly.

 

OBSERVE THE LAWS OF THE GAME

All games need rules to guide them. Without rules, there would be chaos. The rules of soccer are simple and easy to learn. Make an effort to learn them, so you understand the game better. This makes you a better player. It is just as important to understand the spirit of the rules. They are designed to make the game fun to play and fun to watch. By sticking to the rules, you will enjoy the game more.

 

RESPECT OPPONENTS, TEAMMATES, REFEREES, OFFICIALS AND SPECTATORS

Fair play means respect. Without opponents there can be no game. They have the same rights that you have, including the right to be respected. Your teammates are your colleagues. You form a team in which all members are equal. Referees are there to maintain discipline and fair play. Always accept their decisions without arguing, and help them to help you enjoy the game more. Officials are also part of the game and must be respected accordingly. Spectators give the game atmosphere. They want to see the game played fairly, but must also behave fairly themselves.

 

ACCEPT DEFEAT WITH DIGNITY

Nobody wins all the time. You win some, you lose some. Learn to lose graciously. Don’t seek excuses for defeat. Genuine reasons will always be self-evident. Congratulate the winners with good grace. Don’t blame the referee or anyone else. Determine to do better next time. Good losers earn more respect than bad winners.

 

PROMOTE THE INTERESTS OF SOCCER

Soccer is the world’s greatest game. But it always needs your help to keep it as number one. Think of soccer’s interests before your own. Think how your actions may affect the image of the game. Talk about the positive things in the game. Encourage other people to watch it or play it fairly. Help people have as much fun from football as you do. Be an ambassador for the game.

 

REJECT CORRUPTION, DRUGS, RACISM, VIOLENCE, AND OTHER DANGERS TO OUR SPORT

Soccer’s huge popularity sometimes makes it vulnerable to negative outside interests. Watch out for attempts to tempt you into cheating or using drugs. Drugs have no place in soccer or any other sport in our society. Say No to Drugs. Help Kick Racism out of soccer. Treat all players and everyone else equally, regardless of their skin color or origin. Show that soccer does not want violence, even from your own fans. Soccer is Sport, and Sport is Peace.HELP OTHERS TO RESIST CORRUPTING PRESSURES

You may hear that teammates or other people you know are being tempted to cheat in some way. They need your help. Don’t hesitate to stand by them. Give them the strength to resist. Remind them of their commitment to their teammates and to the game itself. Form a block of solidarity, like a solid defense on the field of play.

 

DENOUNCE THOSE WHO ATTEMPT TO DISCREDIT OUR SPORT

Don’t be afraid to show up anybody who you are sure is trying to make others cheat. It’s better to expose them and have them removed before they can do any damage. It often takes more courage to denounce what is wrong, than to just go along with a dishonest plan. Your honesty will be admired but your complicity will not. Don’t just say “No”. Denounce the culprits who are trying to spoil our sport before they can persuade somebody else to say “Yes.”

 

HONOR THOSE WHO DEFEND SOCCER’S GOOD REPUTATION

The good name of soccer has survived because the vast majority of people who love the game are honest and fair. Sometimes somebody does something exceptional that deserves our special recognition. They should be honored and their fine example made public. This encourages others to act in the same way. Help promote soccer’s image by publicizing its good deeds.
